Take a short car-ride North on Number 6 highway and you’ll find yourself at the latest addition to the craft alcohol scene, West Avenue Cider at Somerset Orchards. It’s been a long-time coming with licensing issues, but starting Saturday June 3rd, the West Avenue Cider House is officially open to the public.
Driving up their country laneway, you’re suddenly surrounded by the orchards that are the source of everything in this place, plus loads of stunning country views on the Somerset Orchards 75 acre lot.
There’s yet to be signage on the Cider House, but just follow the people or head to the back right building – that’s where the good stuff is. Inside and to the left, a country market full of local produce and fresh baked treats, plus an open bakery where you can see the daily action of whatever they happen to be making. To the right: the tasting room.
The tasting room is a well-lit rustic room filled with a giant stone-topped bar and seating along each side. Flanking the room are their bottled ciders, information sheets about each cider, and the many awards West Avenue Cider has won for each type.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, helping you choose some sample ciders that will be great for your personal preferences. At a $5 for 3 sample price point, you’re able to sample a few and choose your favourite to take home. With two pages worth of cider types to pick from, that $5 price is helpful!
West Avenue has everything from the classics like their popular Heritage Dry to fruit-infused ciders, (such as their Cherriosity or Bohemian Raspberry) maltier ciders (like Barret Fuller’s Secret), and ciders like Malus Lupulus, which will be the new favourite for beer lovers…including myself! Enjoy your drinks at the bar, stroll the grounds and visit some of their farm animals, or simply just enjoy the view and some good company in their backyard.
West Avenue Cider at Somerset Orchards is worth the 15 minute drive out of the city. It’s a winery experience without the high price tag or travel time!
