Old Bagel House
After the closure of Locke Street Bagels, Hamilton was feeling a void that only a delicious doughy morsel could fill. Apart from the chain restaurants, there wasn’t really anywhere to get a New York… Montreal… anything-style handmade bagel!
Luckily for us bagel-loving Hamiltonians, the Old Bagel House family decided to open shop in Hamilton. In Dundas’ University Plaza, in the space previously occupied by Great Canadian Bagel, the Old Bagel House now serves up freshly-made wood-fired bagels.
The little bagel shop tends to have quite a line up on the weekend, and around meals, as those from the neighbourhood (and beyond) have discovered the deliciousness that is Old Bagel House.
Of course, the main event is – drumroll, please – the bagels! The Old Bagel House team worked for many years at Montreal bagel shops, Real Bagel, Fairmont, and St. Viateur, to name a few. They know what they’re doing when it comes to the hole-y treat.
Available in a large variety of flavours, their bagels have creative names like: Fancy Flax, Cute Caraway, Only Onion, Simple Sesame and Exciting Everything.
As for the toppings, the world is your oyster. From fresh-shaved meat toppings – sandwich-style: chopped liver, egg salad, lox, smoked meat, turkey – to breakfast sandwiches and flavoured cream cheese. Their flavoured cream cheese is made in house and flavours range from Chili Cilantro, Spinach and Pesto, Black Olive, Dill Pesto and more!
If you really want to take your bagel meal to the next level, grab a potato Latka on the side. They’ll be happy to serve it warm with a sauce alongside, if you ask.
But the Old Bagel House doesn’t stop there, they also create pastries and baked goods like Turnovers, Strudels, Rouelach, Knish and more.
This classic bagel shop has been around less than a year, but with their tasty inexpensive options and quick, ready-to-please service, it is quickly becoming a neighbourhood favourite.
