Ask any Hamiltonian for a list of their favourite restaurants downtown, and you’re sure to hear the words “Greek Palace” uttered. Located on the John Street North near King William, this small restaurant is almost ‘underground Hamilton’, but features a delicious and expansive menu of ‘home-cooked’ dishes.
Some swear by their Gyros (pronounced jeer-oh – thinly sliced meat served with onions that has been roasted on a spit), where others are all about their Chicken Souvlaki Pitas (thick pita bread topped with grilled-to-perfection chicken pieces, lettuce, tomato, onion, tzatziki sauce and hot sauce) and Greek Fries (super crispy fries topped with feta cheese and garlic sauce).
If you want to get a little taste of everything, you can also try their Mixed Dinner for 4 which includes 2 chicken souvlaki, 2 pork souvlaki, gyro, grilled chicken, rice, potatoes, 2 pita breads, 2 tzatziki, 2 garlic sauce and 2 greek salads for only $39.99. With the portions they serve up, I call that a superb deal, ideal if you want to bring dinner home to the family or share with coworkers.
Though they’ve just moved one door down from their previous location, their recent move has made them even more appealing. Formerly a vast, double-space restaurant – their new spot, in comparison, seems very snug and homey. Adding to the homelike feel, are the friendly staff, always ready with a smile and welcoming to any questions you may have or substitions you may require.
Vegetarians rejoice! Greek Palace has options for non-meat-eaters as well.
Don’t let the outside deter you! It may still be unfinished, and the signage still temporary, but the inside is a clean cozy nook with imagery of the Mediterranean plastered on the walls. If you want to eat in, there’s lots of seating to choose from…including a sunny window seat.
Greek Palace is usually quite busy at lunch (Hamiltonians love their Greek food) so prepare to wait about 5 to 10 minutes for your order. Don’t have the time to spare? They also deliver, just give them a call!
