A North End hot spot that flies under the radar, Two Cougars & a Cafe is located on Burlington street in what looks like an industrial, no frills strip mall. But don’t let the facade fool you, its far from industrial inside.
The interior is decked out in a mashup of fishing, cottage, Ti-Cats, and Hamilton decor. It is as cozy as eating in your own kitchen. And the staff is very friendly. Regulars read papers at the bar, while families catch up over comfort food. The place is as authentic as you can get. It feels like home.
Breakfast is a big thing here. A fan favourite is the Eggs Benedict, but you can’t go wrong with just about anything on the menu (apparently the skillet could feed a whole family). Their lunch menu is extensive too, with a long list of daily features.
The last time I went for breakfast I ordered the two egg breakfast with sausage. It came with home fries, three nubs of farmers sausage, scrambled eggs, and white bread. The portions are plenty. Almost too much. And the home fries are accompanied (if you choose) with green onions and red peppers, which are nice on the palette. I also ordered a side of baked beans, because who doesn’t love baked beans with breakfast?
Did I mention it’s fast? I feel like once I ordered my meal the food was already at my table. Piping hot. Like all good diners, they also have bottomless coffee. For a caffeine junky like me, that is music to my ears.
The prices are reasonable; the service is fast and friendly; the food is consistent; and the space is welcoming. If you’re looking for a new spot for either breakfast or lunch, add Two Cougars & a Cafe to your list and get there ASAP.
