Maria’s Tortas Jalisco
Off the busy HWY 8, you’ll come across a small authentic Mexican restaurant that will make you feel as if you’ve stepped into Jalisco itself, rather than a borough of Stoney Creek. Maria’s Tortas Jalisco specializes in traditional Mexican fast-food made fresh.
The colourful walls, bold tiles, hand-crafted Mexican art work and hot sauce lining the shelves all help add to the ambiance. Maria’s is more of a take-out joint, so you won’t find much seating here. There are a few bar stools and two comfy chairs for waiting for your meal or enjoying it quickly. After all, with food this good, it won’t last long!
From their social media, I found out that on Tuesdays they offer $2 Tacos – what a deal! So of course, I visited on a Tuesday. Though tacos aren’t all they offer! Their menu is quite extensive, and Maria’s serves up everything from Burritos, Wet Burritos, Tortas (sandwiches), Enchiladas, Quesadillas, Flautas (fried corn tortillas), Papas Asada (fries with toppings) and more!
Once I was there, I started perusing their menu and read a lot about their Tortas Jalisco (a classic Mexican sandwich on a French style bun, buttered with melted cheese done a la plancha stuffed with assorted fillings and served with a side of pickled homemade jalapenos). My dinner companions went with the $2 tacos, and were both extremely pleased with the flavours and size for the inexpensive cost. Plus you can get a variety of taco types, trying more than one for your meal. It’s basically a taco free-for-all!
I, on the other hand, could not resist the Torta after seeing the menu photos, and ordered the Chicken Tortas Jalisco. The smell inside Maria’s was divine as they fried up the buttered bun and cooked up the chicken for the torta. Maria herself serves you, and lets you pick out what toppings you’d like on your tacos and tortas. They also have samples of their sauces and salsas to try beforehand, if you aren’t sure of spice levels. My suggestion? Ask Maria what will work best on your torta or taco – after all, she’s the queen of good food!
On the side? They offer salads, tortilla chips and more. And you’ll need some good drinks to pair with some of that spice! (If you choose it, that is.) Maria’s sells traditional Mexican drinks like Topo Sabores, Jarritos and Jumex.
