If you think Carluke Orchards is a day-trip best left to Autumn, think again. This little Farm Market on the edge of Ancaster has all that you need for Holiday entertaining – not to mention that on a snowy day, the drive out to the community of Carluke is beautiful.
At the end of the tree-lined Shaver Road, surrounded by orchards, is the Inksetter Family business; Carluke Orchards. The Inksetter Family has been farming in the Hamilton area for over 200 years, and started the Carluke Orchard as a pick-your-own operation in 1965 and have expanded to a Bakery and Gourmet Food Market since then. They have quite a history in the area and continue to be a family-run operation of 3 generations.
Inside the board and batten clad country market is a plethora of local goodies and Canadian-made products waiting to be enjoyed. When you first step into the market, you’ll be welcomed with the smell of fresh baked goods and views of sauces, dips, jams and more – all sourced from Canadian companies like Wicked Gourmet, Gramma’s Summer Kitchen, Rootham Gourmet Preserves and many more.
Around the corner from the main room, is the apple room. Packed to the brim with apples of all varieties, sparkling juice and apple ciders; this room is an apple-lovers heaven.
The gem of Carluke Orchards is their baked goods bar. Offering pies (in an array of seasonal flavours), shortbread and sugar cookies, scones, muffins, and tarts. Their baked goods have a perfect balance of sweetness and are never too dry. Baked goods from Carluke are sure to impress any Holiday guest. If you’re looking for a specific pie or cookie flavour, make sure you give them a call ahead of time. For a full list of their baked good options visit their website, though you may find some special one-off products when you visit.
On top of all their yummy sweets, are quiche and tourtieres available refrigerated or frozen. The flaky, buttery crust of their pastries is something to write home about and when partnered with the savoury, flavourful fillings makes for a delicious, easy meal.
Whether you’re looking for items for entertaining or just to enjoy on your own (treat yo self!), Carluke Orchards is worth the short drive out of the city.
